The Story of Mrs. Hallie
The Story of Mrs. Hallie
Hallie Randall, who was affectionately known as "Miss Hallie,"
began her career as a teacher in 1926 in a oneroom schoolhouse.
She retired in 1972 after 46 years in education. During her tenure
she served as principal and superintendent of Fruitvale ISD. She
was instrumental in establishing the Fruitvale Fire Department in
1964, helped incorporate Fruitvale as a city and started the city's
senior citizen nutrition program. Miss Hallie helped to organize the
Fruitvale Housing Authority and donated land for the Van Zandt
Children's Shelter. She served as Fruitvale's mayor from 1976 until
1990 when poor health forced her to retire. During her life, she
received the Texas Association Senior Center Excellence award, Van
Zandt County's "Outstanding Woman of the Year" award, a "Certificate
of Appreciation" from the United States Postal Service and, in 1990,
the Texas House of Representatives proclaimed a "Hallie Randall Day"
in honor of her accomplishments and her many years of service in her community. "Miss Hallie" loved children. She called the General Merchandise
building that her husband W.L.Randall established in 1910
her home after the couple married in 1930. The walls are lined with pictures of "her kids."It was Fruitvale ISD board members who voted to name the
elementary school building to honor Miss Hallie Randall. A plaque that was financed by private
donations is placed in that building to honor her.
