"ROUND UP FOR LEARNING!"

Hallie Randall Elementary is a wonderful place to work and learn. Students are happy, hard working, and persistent. Teachers are excellent, knowledgeable, caring and encouraging. Parents are supportive and involved. Mix all that and you get a recognized campus.
This year's theme is "Round Up for Learning". There are many classroom versions of our Western theme. Our campus has many great programs.

"CEI" LEARINING LAB
This is a multi-sensory lab to help struggling readers, the dyslexic and the ESL students.

"STAR" LAB AND TUTORIALS
We use this lab to strengthen students' reading and math skills. Each child has the opportunity to attend the lab each week. Students needing more attention in these areas are able to attend for extra tutorial labs.

"EYP"-EXTEND YOUR POTENTIAL
This is an after school program during our second semester. Again the focus is to reach and assist students still struggling in reading and math. We also pay very close attention to our students who are in danger of failing.

GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM
Nominations to this program can be made by teachers or parents. Kindergarten through fifth grade participate in this active program independently, with their grade level peers and with their G/T peers. The curriculum in all of the elementary classes focuses on the development of theses abilities:

1. Stimulation of curiosity and interest
2. Development of creative cognitive ability
3. Development of leadership skills
4. Development of independence
5. Development of self-expression
6. Provisions for a rapid pace of learning
7. Integration of math, science, social studies, and language arts

"FLUENCY FRIENDS"
Hallie Randall Elementary feels it is very important to incorporate many strategies to help students achieve reading success. Reading fluency is just one step towards learning to read, but an important one. When a child can identify the first list of words in random order, he/she tells the teacher. The teacher checks for accuracy. The teacher will have the student complete an "I am ready" form to be taken to the principal. The student is then called to the office where he/she reads to the principal. Each student must be able to have automatic recognition of each word and pronounce each word correctly. A surprise word is given to the student in which he/she must use it correctly in a sentence. If the student is successful; they receive a place on the principal's "Fluency Friends" Chart, displayed in the hallway. At that time the next list is given to the student and the process begins again.

FLUENCY "FRY" PHRASES
This is a continued program for students to improve their reading fluency. As they complete the initial fluency programs, they get to start our new programs. It works much like the original programs. Students completing each unit are awarded by having their names pasted in the hallway and receiving recognition during each six weeks awards program.

GRADE LEVEL AND CROSS-CURRICULUM PLANNING
Grade level team members meet as well as cross-curriculum teams. They plan together, share, discuss and examine effective strategies and practices. This collegial dialogue has formed stronger links between peers and benefited the students as well.

ADVENTURES IN LEARNING
Parents participated in an evening of hands-on-activities that promote math, reading, language arts and science. TAKS, SDAA, TPRI, promotion requirements, schedules, special events, and projects are also discussed.

INTERVENTION
All of our instructional aides have been trained to work with individuals or small groups. They work on letter and numbers recognition, fluency word lists, Accelerated Reading tests, assist during center time and much, much more. This additional assistance helps reinforce concepts the students have been unable to retain or master from classroom instruction.

VOLUNTEERS
Parents and community volunteers of all ages are a great resource for us. They give of their time to individuals and small groups needing that little extra attention or assistance. Our volunteers are valuable.

INCLUSION
Every child is encouraged to maximize his/her potential by being involved with instruction in an inclusive classroom setting. Special education teachers and general education teachers work and plan together to best meet the needs of the child. Students are able to master the SDAA and TAKS, as well as increase self-esteem and achievement.

CHARACTER EDUCATION PROGRAM
We realize that learning is hindered when students do not possess the character traits needed to work cooperatively and independently. We recognize that teacher-student and student-student interactions must be structured with care-especially when dealing with behavior issues and their underlying character traits, values and attitudes. Our campus chooses to implement a character education program using "Core Essentials" and "The Beginning of a Hero".

LITERACY EVENTS
These events are another way to promote reading. It helps children understand that reading can be fun and fundamental to success in life. We want our students to become life long readers. There are guest readers, special interactive activities, pillows, blankets, bean bags, and lots of reading.

TECHNOLOGY:
Technology is an integral part of Hallie Randall Elementary. Staff and faculty have been trained in the latest instructional techniques. All classrooms have at least three networked computers, access to a 12 station wireless laptop lab, an LCD projector, and two digital cameras. We also have two computer labs.
